Join us on our mission to get people talking about how unconscious bias could be influencing the way we behave, especially in the workplace. No matter how well-meaning we are, we all have in-built biases. And it’s little slips like the language we use at work that mean we unintentionally exclude or favour our colleagues. Together, let’s acknowledge and address this.

Share how you are trying, learning and overcoming your unconscious biases with #itsnotthathard to inspire others to do the same.

What is unconscious bias?

Every one of us has built-in biases that can lead us to make unfair assumptions, no matter how well-intentioned we might be. Our brains create automatic mental shortcuts that help us process the vast amount of information we have to deal with every day. Most of the time this is helpful. But when it comes to unconscious attitudes and beliefs about certain groups of people, it can cause problems. Overcoming unintended discrimination is critical to creating diverse, inclusive and high-performing workplaces. That’s why it’s important to start these conversations about overcoming unconscious bias.

Question your assumptions

Self-reflect and consider if you would have the same thoughts if the situation involved different types of people.

Hold people accountable

Hold yourself accountable for self-analysing and self-learning, and politely call our others engaging in biased behaviours.

Disrupt the default

Challenge when the status quo perpetuates bias and seek mentors from a different demographic group to your own.

Speak out

Discuss issues in ways that are comfortable to you. Share your experiences to generate solutions that will work for everyone.

"Inclusion means bringing yourself to work, and bringing yourself where ever you go. Being ‘you’ all the time and not changing yourself, whoever you are."
